Multidestination Communication Over Tunable-Receiver Single-Hop WDM Networks

چکیده
The importance of computer applications and telecommunication services relying on eecient multi-destination communication is growing rapidly. It is now likely that a signiicant portion of the overall traac in future communication environments will be of the multi-destination type. At the same time, lightwave technology is emerging as a promising candidate for implementing the next generation of multiuser high-speed networks. In this paper we address the issue of providing eecient mechanisms for multi-destination communication over one class of lightwave WDM architectures, namely, single-hop networks with tunability provided only at the receiving side. We distinguish a number of multicast traac types, and we suggest, analyze, and optimize alternative broadcast/multicast approaches for each type. One of our major contributions is the development of a suite of adaptive multicast protocols which are simple to implement, and have good performance under changing multicast traac conditions.

Our approach employs a controlchannel-based media-access protocol that schedules multicast packets while incorporating arbitrar...
متن کاملMac Protocols for Wdm Networks – Survey and Summary
With the proliferation of the world-wide-web (WWW), current local and wide area networks can hardly cope with the huge demand for network bandwidth. As a result, there is a world-wide effort in upgrading current networks with highcapacity fiber-optic links that can potentially deliver Tera-bits/sec bandwidth. The Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) is an effective technique for utilizing the...
متن کاملReconnguration in Rapidly Tunable Transmitter, Slowly Tunable Receiver Single-hop Wdm Networks
We consider broadcast WDM networks with nodes equipped with rapidly tunable transmitters and slowly tunable receivers. The rapidly tunable transmitters provide all-optical paths among the network nodes by creating logical connections that can be changed on a packet-by-packet basis. The ability of receivers to tune, albeit slowly, is invoked only for reallocating the bandwidth in response to cha...
